sonyawins: I learned about the terms political/non-political lesbian this past weekend, with me being labeled as "non-political". I wasn't offended, but since no elaboration was given on the meaning, I was hoping you could provide some clarity. Peace

Hi sonyawins!

The only context I am familiar with hearing the term “political lesbian” in is the Cheryl Clarke piece that I have linked here. From my understanding it goes beyond the emotional/sexual attraction to women, and moves to actively resisting the patriarchy and colonization of feminine bodies. Another article by Julie Bindel references a “political lesbian” as a woman who chooses to love women as a positive alternative to heterosexuality. If you come across any other meanings, please share! :)
